The Belt of Truth

When I first started learning about Original Strength, or Becoming Bulletproof rather, I became convinced that strength starts from the center and builds in layers from there. In other words, the secret to a strong body was having a reflexively strong center. Later, I learned that there are always parallel truths. For example, to truly become bulletproof, I must also have strength inside of my thoughts, from my center. If I harbor thoughts of weakness, fear, or brokenness, I can never become bulletproof because at my core, I’m holding onto the opposite.

So again, the secret to a strong body is having a reflexively strong center, both physically and mentally. But what is a reflexively strong center for the mind, or better yet, how do you develop one?

It may be no secret, but I find a great deal of comfort and inspiration from Scripture. Years ago, when I was asking to become bulletproof, I was drawn to the passage in Ephesians 6 that talks about “the armor of God.” I love that passage, because in it, was a list of equipment that would protect and shield the body and mind from attacks, keeping one resilient and able to stand through whatever lays ahead.

Interestingly enough, the very first instruction for donning this armor and becoming resilient is to gird yourself with the belt of truth. Or let me say it another way, to wrap your center tightly with truth. Do you see it? The center, the truth?

What if a reflexively strong mind was created or established in knowing the truth? What is truth, you might ask (Now that’s a famous question...). Well, that could be a rather large and colorful conversation, but for the purpose of this post, could we agree that the truth is that YOU are awesomely and wonderfully made?  You are. That is the truth. You are a masterpiece. You weren’t made for consuming thoughts of fear, anxiety, depression, or sadness. Your body wasn’t made to be weak or frail. I’m not saying you may not experience these things, but I am saying they are attacks, they are not the truth.

If the truth is knowing you are a masterpiece and you were created to be resilient, then that knowledge can indeed become the reflexive foundation from which strength is born. It can certainly become the first piece of armor that protects your soul when it is attacked by lies and thoughts of the contrary. If in your deepest, most center of being, you truly knew and believed you were wonderfully made, how easy would it be to reject and deflect attacks to your soul and your body? If someone told you you were going to start losing your memory when you turned 50, you would immediately laugh and say, “No, you’ve mistaken me for someone else.” Or, if you all of a sudden developed a random knee pain, you might say, “No, that doesn’t belong in me. I’ll not accept that.”

I know it’s crazy. But what would life be like if we actually did gird ourselves with the truth? Every day we are bombarded with the lies of the world, with attacks, with “news”, with “normalcy”, but we really aren’t bombarded with truth. AND, what if truth was something we had to chose to take and wrap around our center, or truth was something we had to chose to hold onto at the center of our very being? What if that meant the very heart of strength, of living life well, was a choice; a choice to believe the truth, to hold onto it?

The truth is we are all wonderfully made. We are all meant to be strong and meant to live a life worth living. But the reality is, accepting the truth is a choice. Becoming bulletproof, being strong, is not just about moving certain ways and doing certain things, it’s also about choosing and believing to be bulletproof. It’s about having the courage to resist settling for the world’s normals and lies.

The secret to strength is a reflexively strong center, physically and mentally. Your breath is the first movement that builds your physical center. Your belief in truth is the first “movement” that builds your mental center. Together, those two centers help you to withstand life’s attacks. IF you are rooted in truth. If not, the reflexive center of your thoughts, what you really believe will affect how you breathe and your center won’t be too solid, mentally or physically. Does this make sense?

Know the truth. Believe the truth. Gird yourself with it. You are a masterpiece, made for a strong life. If you didn’t know that, now you do. Merry Christmas.
