How To Become _______________.

Have you ever wanted something so bad and worked very hard to get it only to be frustrated or irritated or dejected when you didn’t get, or couldn’t get what you wanted? Let me be more specific. Have you ever wanted to move a certain way, look a certain way, feel a certain way, or be a certain way? In pursuit of that “way”, did you spend a great deal of effort or collect a great deal of ‘knowledge” and still come up short? This can be very frustrating and it can cause a great deal of suffering.

I think many of us suffer in this way because we lack one simple thing: Belief.

I know this sounds crazy or naive, but I’ve seen this time and time again. Often people don’t receive what they want because they aren’t believing what they want. This being said, often people already have what they want, they just don’t know it yet. But that’s another discussion.

Anyway, people often get exactly what they believe and not exactly what they want.

For example, I was at a gym with a friend. She was happy she could do one legged squats and was rocking them, on her right leg. Over and over I watched her do squats on her right leg; never her left. Then she said, “I can’t do these on my left.” And she was right, because that’s what she believed. I even told her so. You know what happened then? She tried one on her left and boom, there it was. She could do it. But she didn’t know it because she didn’t believe it. She believed she couldn’t so she wasn’t even going to try it. How then did she do it on her left when she did try it? I told her she could do it. She borrowed my belief and was curious enough to find out. Up until that point, she was getting and doing exactly what she believed.

This happens all the time and you see it all around you. People are limited by their beliefs, no matter how much knowledge they have. For example, millions of people want to be “healthy” and at a good weight for their body. Millions of people “know” eating fast food is not the path they should take, given what they want. Yet, their knowledge doesn’t stop them from ordering The #3 with Pop… Yes, you could argue the chemicals in the food, the addictions, the marketing, the convenience of it all. But you could also argue the belief of it all too. “I can’t lose weight,” “eating right is hard,” “It’s so expensive to eat healthily,” etc… Those are not facts, by the way, those are beliefs. And it is those type of beliefs that give the outcomes the person experiences. Most people don’t have a knowledge problem. They have a belief problem.

Belief trumps knowledge any day. If you don’t believe me, I have two words for you: Placebo Effect. Sugar pills work wonders for people who believe they are taking the medication that will solve their issue… The mind and what it holds onto is very powerful.

I guess the point to all of this is that if you are frustrated because there is a huge gap between what you want and what you are experiencing, it may be a good idea to discover what beliefs you are holding. You may be believing things you don't even know you are believing. It may also be a good idea to explore believing the very things you say that you want.

Remember, it’s not what you know. It’s what you believe. Belief tends to fuel the action of people and it also tends to give birth to the outcomes people experience.

Where the mind goes, the body will follow...
