Happy New You

Categories: Blog Dec 30, 2018

It’s 2019.

Are you ready?

Did you make new plans for a new you in a new year?

Have you done that before?

You probably know this but most people don’t really stick to New Year’s resolutions. Or it may be better to say most New Year’s resolutions simply don’t stick. This is wild when you think about it because New Year’s resolutions are probably what keep the fitness and diet worlds rolling along. Anyway, if you’ve ever made a New Year’s resolution and it didn’t stick, you shouldn’t feel bad about it. There are a few reasons these resolutions don’t stick.

One superficial reason New Year’s resolutions don’t stick is because the numbers are against us. Making changes in your life is a game of numbers. And unfortunately, when we decide or become resolute that we are going to make a change, we have a history of numbers stacked up against us. Whatever it is we want to change from is likely a well grooved habit that we have built over time from doing that whatever. For example, if i want to stop chewing gum and I suddenly decide I’m going to stop, great. That’s a cool decision that could change my life, especially if I stop. However, if I’ve chewed gum every day for the last 10 years, the first day I don’t chew gum I’ve got a numbers ratio of 3650 days of chewing to 1 day of not chewing. The history I’ve accumulated of the habit I want to change is very “heavy” and “weighty” in the realm of numbers to my new action or decided inaction. For my resolution to stick, I’ve got to add up my numbers and tilt the scales. Which is VERY doable. But if it’s so doable, there has to be another reason that New Year’s resolutions still don’t stick.

And there is; a much deeper reason... Most New Year’s resolutions don’t stick because most people simply don’t know they are brand new every day. Most people wait to make a change or improve themselves at the first of the year when the truth is they are brand new and capable of change every single day they get to wake up.

Stick with me... You have immense power inside of you.

Your nervous system is constantly being created and made new with every thought you make and every action you take. You can build the nervous system you want to have by engaging in the thoughts and actions of the things you want to do. You can create new neural pathways or erase old ones. You can make them efficient or sabotage them and shake them out. You have so much power in you it’s ridiculous. You actually get to co-create your own nervous system, you get to co-design your life, your body, your thoughts, your everything.

If this is true, and it is, why do so many people miss the mark when it comes to making the changes they want make? Is it lack of desire? Maybe for some. There is an ownership/responsibility/truth-to-yourself portion of making change, yes. But most people don’t make their desires stick because they don’t know who they are and they don’t know they can.

We live in a cause and effect world and therefore we are the way we are because... But that’s only the lie that keeps us the way we are and keeps up from being who we want to be. We believe we are victims of cause, we are the effect. But the truth is we are the way we are because we don’t know who we are or what we are capable of.

Listen... you are powerful.

You are brand new every single day.

You can absolutely shape your nervous system for better or for worse. It’s still a game of numbers, but when you know how to work the numbers and when you know who you are, working the numbers becomes easy. You don’t have to wait for a big event to make a change. All you have to do is realize your power potential and use it every new day, or even every new moment.

It doesn’t have to be hard. If you want to move better it can be as simple as doing 20 cross-crawls every day 3 times a day (70 whole seconds out of your entire day). If you want to be healthier it can be as simple as eating something “green” every single day. If you want to feel better it can be as simple as saying, “I am wonderfully made,” or “I am loved” every single day.

You don’t have to wait for an event to change. You are the event. Each first-of-the- year should never be a pass/fail period of time. Nor should each day. You are new each moment and life is only meant to be enjoyed. In other words, failure was never in the plan.

Don’t cling to the past, don’t hold on to the world or what it says about you, or what you imagine it says about you. You get to decide how you build your nervous system, your body, your thoughts and your life. That is powerful and just knowing that can make you brand new.

The point is, you are capable of change and capable of becoming who you want to be. That power is in you - but you have to realize it to actualize it. You can, because you are.

Happy New Year, Happy New Day, and  Happy New You.
