The Mastery of Head Control

In Original Strength, we cannot over emphasize the importance of mastering head control. Every muscle in your body, every sensory system you have, they are all attached to your vestibular system. Your vestibular system is your "balance" system, or your "reflexive response" system. This system lives in your head and it is learning how to move your head that builds your balance, posture, and coordination. In other words, learning how to move your head builds you. This is why it is so important to master control of moving your head. It is essential to your strength, to your physical health.

BUT, mastering head control is also much more than the key to physical health. It is essential to mental and emotional health as well. Our emotional health, our mental state, is also expressed or revealed through the ability to control our head. Think about this for a second. Imagine someone who is sad, where do you see their head being held? How do you imagine their facial expression to be? Now, imagine someone who is filled with joy. Where is their head being held? What is the look and countenance of their face?

The position of our head often reveals the position of our mental state. There is no doubt that our emotions are expressed through our movements. I believe this is very evident. But what if our movements also effect our emotions?

What if the phrase, "Where the head goes, the body will follow" is much more than a physical truth? What if it is also an emotional, mental truth - a truth of the soul?

Think of these things: depression, anger, sadness, fear, doubt, loneliness, low self esteem, or even shyness. Where is the head typically held in these states of mind? Now think of these things: happiness, laughter, confidence, boldness, joy, and even peace. Where do you imagine the head to be held in your mind's eye now?

Yes, our emotions do effect the position of our head, to be sure. But what if that is a two-way street? What if the position of our heads and the position of our souls is a conversation? What if your head effects how you feel?

We were made so that our heads stayed level with the horizon. Every muscle in your body is reflexively attached to this intent. This is how we were made! If this is how we were made, then perhaps not walking around like this, not walking around with our heads held up on the horizon, also lowers our mental and emotional state. After all, if we are not living according to our design, why would our soul be operating at full potential?

How often have you heard the phrase, "Pick your head up." offered to someone who was in need of comfort? Is this just a phrase, or is their intuitive wisdom behind it? The same intuitive wisdom in a mother that causes her to ROCK her child if they are in distress? Often times the wisdom we desperately need is already inside of us. We already know that holding the head up somehow lifts the soul. It is intuitively wired in us.

Yet, we live in a world that is hurting. Look around. People everywhere walk with their heads held down. People are sad, scared, depressed, and lonely. We are also distracted. People walk around constantly holding their head down on purpose to see their smart phone. Eventually, that could effect the emotional state of the person. Why? Because we are simply made to keep our heads on the horizon. Everything about us is effected, if not determined, by where we keep our heads and how we move them.

Do you need to "feel better"? Do you want to be strong mentally as well as physically? Then learn how to control your head. Learn how to keep it level with the horizon. Go for walks, without a phone. Keep your head looking straight, level with the horizon. If you want to see what is coming up behind you, or beside you, learn how to rotate your head and turn your neck to see. Don't look down at the ground. Hold your head up - Look Up. It is GOOD for you - for ALL of you.

Marinate on this. There is a two way conversation between your emotional, mental state, and how you move and hold your head. You were made to move. You were made to keep your head up. And, you were made to be strong: confident, happy, peace filled, free and bold.

Strength does not simply live in your muscles. It comes from above. Hold your head up and be strong!
